I didn’t have a tripod for this shot. But I was able to set up my camera on top of the corner post of the white railing. Then I turned around and used that white railing as a leading line from my camera into the scene. I think it all worked out quite beautifully.

This was shot in the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. It is like one great outdoor Chinese studio. What a great place for portraits of all kinds—family, wedding, holiday…

Here is actually a picture processed into HDR and then processed back primarily using vignettes to make it look non-HDR. Is that a lot of work to go back to the same place? These are the questions I ask myself when my carpel tunnel starts to kick in.

Studios are great and everything, but I prefer to work in the real world. My vision for this photo was to take advantage of the background to provide a Mona Lisa-ish feel. I used the setting sun to backlight my subjects. And I used a mounted lens flash facing upwards at a 45 degree angle to provide a little extra light on their faces.

No, Zulu’s mane is not 100% black like Scar’s from the Lion King. But it is black. And yes, he is one of the last of that genetic breed (lion’s are now almost exclusively Aryan).

The original picture as taken was beautiful, but it was a little to gray—both literally and figuratively. To get this stronger and more powerful image, I used Topaz Adjust ‘photo pop,’ then Topaz Adjust Detail ‘feature enhancement II,’ and finally I upped the contrast while adding a vignette.

Part of me loves Photoshop, but part of me hates Photoshop. Photoshop has done to photography what steroids have done to sports—makes you doubt authenticity. This photograph is a real photograph, scout’s honor.

Here’s the story: at the request of good friend Daniel Romans, who is a huge Auburn Fan, I snuck up, put his hat on top of this Giant Panda, and then took this picture. I still can’t believe it myself. My only explanation is that I think the authorities thought I was some kind of famous athlete or something and let me do whatever I wanted.

I just love everything about what this photograph says. Perhaps one day I will photoshop this onto a couch to really hammer home the message. But for starters, I want to get the original picture out there.

This happened at one of the Chiang Mai elephant farms. They asked for a volunteer—some kid went up there and got totally played by this elephant. One of the things that happened was that the handler distracted the kid so the elephant could swipe his hat. Here, you’re seeing the elephant return the kid’s hat.

Here we have dedicated tramper Cameron Del Geesh. I don’t say dedicated lightly—everyone at the Parks office discourage Cameron from taking on the Kepler in August by giving him horror after horror stories. No worries. He just loaded up a HUGE PACK and took it on.
