A tripod is a very handy piece of equipment. It allows you to take shots like this (long exposures in the dark without everything getting blurry). But wait!!! I DIDN’T USE A TRIPOD FOR THIS SHOT. Why? Mostly because they are a pain in the arse to carry around. With a tripod I am announcing to the whole world I’m a photographer. With my undercover camera bag, all I have to do is sling it like a backpack and all of a sudden I’m off the radar and free as a bird. I’m not really sure why that is important, but I like it.
So how did I get this shot then? Well, with VR (for cannon it’s IS), you can slow it down to ¼ of a second handheld no problem. Then I took the shot into Topaz Labs and used a spiral zoom blur effect found in Topaz Lens Effect and made it seem like we were looking at a 5 second exposure. Trixy tricky I know. But these are the kind of tricks that can save you from (a) lugging a giant tripod around with you and (b) looking like a goober bc you have a giant tripod.
